Dreams of a Different Public Education
The Khalil Gibran school, founded by a Muslim educator Debbie Almontaser, tried to offer something unique in American public schools--mandatory Arabic language instruction. Ms. Almontaser dreamed that the school's graduates would become "ambassadors of peace and hope." After a negative publicity campaign led by Daniel Pipes forced Ms. Almontaser to resign as principal of Gibran, the school's promise has yet to be reached.
