Mission
The Religion, Politics and Globalization Program (RPGP)
promotes multidisciplinary research and provides programming
on the themes of religion, politics and globalization.
Working with UC Berkeley's international and area studies
centers, as well as the university's graduate programs
and professional schools, RPGP organizes lectures and
conferences, encourages research at the undergraduate,
graduate, and faculty levels, and serves as a hub for
students, scholars and community members at Berkeley
who are interested in understanding how the forces of
religion, politics and globalization interact in the
modern world.
Activities
To address these complicated issues, International
and Area Studies (IAS) has launched the Religion, Politics,
and Globalization Program. The Program's goals are two-fold.
First, by organizing public programming including conferences,
lectures, panel discussions, and cultural performances, the
Religion, Politics and Globalization Program challenges stereotypes,
opens channels for dialogue, and provides theoretical and
historical context for global sites of strife. These activities
both enrich the educational experience for the 30,000 students
on our campus, and promote community conversations about some
of the most difficult issues affecting our globalized society.
Second, through this initiative, UC Berkeley can better support
its leading scholars in various disciplines who are doing
cutting-edge research on the relationship between religious
communities and world affairs.
